Hellerwork
History
This type of bodywork was developed by Dr Joseph Heller in the 1970s. Like Aston Patterning, Hellerwork originated from Rolfing (see fact sheet). Heller trained with Dr Ida Rolf and shared her belief that the body must be aligned with gravity otherwise tension will occur which could lead to illnesses, however he thought that psycho-emotional considerations should also be integrated as emotional and physical stress is stored in the body.
A session
The keystone of Hellerwork is the exploration of the relationship of the body and the mind. A Hellerwork course consists of 11 sessions of 90 minutes, it focuses on three areas: dialogue, movement education and massage.
During a session the therapist and client explore emotions: the therapist helps relieve emotional and physical blockages by working on various parts of the body while asking the client to mention any release of emotional stress or worries they experience.
Practitioners also work on movement education, they teach stress-free ways to perform daily activities in order to prevent further blockages.
Massage involving deep manipulation and pressure techniques similar to Rolfing is used, the therapist focuses on specific areas such as those used in posture, walking, breathing, pelvic and abdominal muscles.
